Global Good Neighbor Strategy Meeting
Two dozen “national strategists” met outside New York City at the Pocantico conference center to lay the groundwork to move the Global Good Neighbor Initiative forward. Six participants volunteered to form a national GGN Committee that will oversee the initiative over the next year, seek funding for a staff person, and develop a strategic plan for Global Good Neighbor. The International Relations Center agreed to constitute the “hub” for the initiative over the same period. Other exciting news was that the IRC received a $10,000 grant from Connect US to distribute Global Good Neighbor Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that are being produced for radio by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.
GGN Committee members: Steve Cobble, Institute for Policy Studies; Marie Dennis, Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers; Alison Giffen, Open Society Institute; Julia Greenberg, American Jewish World Service; Peggy Huppert, Iowans for Sensible Priorities; Tony Kireopoulos, National Council of Churches; Susan Shaer, Women’s Action for New Direction; and Geoff Thale, Washington Office on Latin America.
A reception was held on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the San Francisco Film Centre, where Global Good Neighbor commendations were awarded to Ann Wright and the San Francsico Mayor and Board of Supervisors. An IRC panel discussion was held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Room 50, Birge Building, UC - Berkeley, and another on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 10:00 pm at La Peña Cultural Center. IRC program staff Tom Barry, Laura Carlsen, and John Gershman were joined by former diplomat Ann Wright and FPIF analysts Conn Hallinan and Stephen Zunes for a panel discussion entitled "Can the United States be a Global Good Neighbor? Opportunities and Obstacles for a New Foreign Policy." The evening discussion was followed by music - Dr. Loco with Tomas Montoya. (Event Details)
